Communicable disease is a disease, the causative agents of which may pass or be carried from a person, animal or the environment to a susceptible person either directly or indirectly. A contagious disease is a subset category of communicable diseases, which are easily transmitted by physical contact with the person suffering the disease, or by their secretions or objects touched by them.
Well there are many diseases that can be transmitted from one person to another and most of the people including medical students are always worried about a disease being transmitted to them from a patient. Being a medical student from Indian subcontinent where we face a lot of patients with infectious disease. I have always suffered from these moments where I am apprehensive about handling a patient, who knows when I might be suffering from the same disease the patient has. Everyone has these apprehensions but as a medical student we should be able to distinguish between what iscontagious and what is not. For example many laymen in this part of the world still are not clear about the route of transmission of AIDS (ok ! let me clear HIV is found in 4 body fluids viz., semen, vaginal fluid, blood, breast milk). One such situation i faced myself is while was dealing with a leprosy patient when i had no idea about its mode of transmission (The exact mechanism of transmission of leprosy is not known. Until recently, the disease was suspected to be transmitted by contact between cases of leprosy and healthy persons. More recently the possibility of transmission by the respiratory route is gaining ground. ). Same problems occur when u deal with malaria, dengue, chicken pox, shingles, cold or even patients with simple rash. I found this wonderful quiz about contagious diseases on WebMD and i believe you should definitely check it. Link to Contagious Disease Quiz
Always be safe, practice Hand washing !
